My Oxford Year
Audiobook review
I’m not a big book reviewer. I tend to be a stars-only reviewer but I love to read reviews…sometimes. They’re so subjective that I can read a scathing 1 star review of a book I personally would give 3 stars to and vice versa. I thought I’d take a stab at writing some out reviews here.
I’ve had Julia Whelan’s voice in my ears many times over the years. I feel like we’re buddies even though I know nothing about her and she doesn’t know I exist. Her debut novel will be hard to top so I hope she only has the one her tank. She absolutely crushed it. (after writing this review I learned that she has authored two more books lol)
I highly recommend listening to this one because she reads it. It’s one author-read novel you’ll actually want to hear the author read. I know that can be a touchy subject.
My Oxford Year is about a 20-something gal who spends a year at Oxford and experiences grief, awe, joy, and reluctantly, love. You can read the book jacket if you want. I rarely do past the first couple of sentences.
You’ll like this if you’re an American woman obsessed with the British, enjoy literature (especially mid-1800s authors), have been wanting to read a modern love story that’s not pornographic, or if you just want to read a great book. I found myself wanting to pause the book and think for a bit when Ella would experience something that I’ve never thought of in the same way. I love a flighty, entertaining book as much as the next gal, but I love one that makes you think too. This was kind of all in one.
I listened to the book through my Hoopla digital app. I try to get kindle or audio books there or through my library on Libby before I buy a book.
Have you read My Oxford Year? I’d love to know your thoughts if you have.
